Purchasing a refurbished CT scanner is about more than staying within budget—it’s about ensuring patient safety, diagnostic accuracy, and long-term equipment reliability. Use the checklist below to evaluate the true condition of a system before signing the purchase agreement.
System condition
- X-ray tube: Check the scan seconds and exposure count. If the remaining tube life is below 30%, plan for replacement in the near future.
- Gantry: Listen for unusual noises during rotation. Vibrations or squeaking may indicate bearing wear.
- Patient table: Ensure movement is smooth and free of jerks. Verify positioning accuracy—an error greater than 1 mm can affect image reconstruction quality.
Software
- Verify the software version. Older releases may not support modern DICOM standards or PACS integration.
- Confirm the availability of clinical applications such as cardiac CT, CT angiography, and low-dose protocols.
- Check that licenses are active for advanced reconstruction algorithms such as IR, AIDR, or ASiR.
Hardware condition
- Inspect the UPS or power stabilizer. Voltage fluctuations can damage sensitive system components.
- Perform a visual inspection of cables, connectors, and the cooling system. Signs of corrosion or cracked components may compromise system reliability.
Image quality
- Perform a phantom scan and evaluate image uniformity, noise levels, and artifacts.
- Verify detector calibration. Aging detector panels often produce streaks or banding artifacts in reconstructed images.
Documentation and equipment history
- Request a certificate of origin, including the country of origin and previous owner.
- Review the complete service history, including the date of the last preventive maintenance, X-ray tube replacement, and detector repairs or replacement.
- Verify that customs clearance documentation and import records comply with applicable regulatory requirements.
